Set between Trinity Lane and the River Cam, Old Court in Clare College is one of the most beautiful courtyards in the city. It is largely the product of 17th rebuilding. Two key masons, Robert Grumbold and George Jackson, guided the style of the reconstruction, and both were heavily influenced by the activities of the renowned architect Sir Christopher Wren. The college was founded in 1326 but didn't fully adopt it's name as Clare College until 1856, even though it's refounding was in 1338 by Elizabeth de Burgh, Countess of Clare. All the original buildings have gone.
