The gatehouse to St. John's College on St. John's Street is one of the landmarks of central Cambridge. The east flank of First Court, housing the gatehouse, dates from the early 16th century. The college was founded by Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother to Henry VII, in 1511, but the site was originally the Hospital of St. John the Evangelist founded in 1208. This represents one of the few brick buildings in Cambridge that was not ashlared, when a sheet of stone was laid over the brick, a popular alteration from the early 18th century.
