Gates to St. Catharine's

The beautiful wrought ironwork of these gates mark one of the most spectacular views into a Cambridge courtyard. This is Principal Court of St. Catharine's College. The three-sided courtyard was built in the 17th century during the mastership of Dr. John Eachard (1657-97), while the college itself was founded in 1473. The main gate is seldom open, but graduands have the honour of passing through the gate onto Trumpington Street for their graduation ceremony.
