Trinity College is by far the grandest and perhaps most familiar of all the colleges in Cambridge, and so the artist undertook to portray a very intimate scene of the college that is often overlooked. The arches in Whewell's courts line up to form an almost tunnel-like pathway from Trinity Street to Sidney Street. These neo-Tudor buildings were built by Anthony Salvin in the 1860s and modified in the early 20th century. While one of Sheldon's smallest paintings in the Cambridge collection, it is one of his most favourite renditions of Cambridge.
